Recreational programs at the KWSC are offered in
Fall/Winter from mid-October to mid-March; in Spring from mid-April
to mid-June; and for Summer, in two 5 week sessions from June-July
and/or July-August.

Preschool Program
(a Skate Canada sanctioned skills program) Aim:
The focus of this program is to make skating fun. Skating
skills taught range from learning to stand and balance to going
forward and backward.
Description: This program is the learn-to-skate
program for beginners who are 3 to 5 years of age.
Children are placed in groups according to ability and taught by
a Professional Coach (1 per 10 skaters), assisted by qualified
CANSkate Program Assistants. Each 45 minute session
consists of a 10 minute warm up, a 30 minute lesson/fun time,
and a 5 minute cool down. Special days are held once per
month.
Requirements: Children must be 3 to 5 years of
age. Proof of age is required. Properly fitted CSA
approved helmets MUST be worn by all skaters. Parents are
NOT allowed on the ice. Expect a 2 or 3 week adjustment
period from some of the younger participants.

Learn To Skate Community
Program (a leisure program offered in
cooperation with the cities of Kitchener and Waterloo)
Aim: The focus of this program is to learn basic
skating skills in a large group setting while having fun.
Description: Skaters are placed in groups
according to their ability and taught by a Professional Coach
and Program Assistants (1 per 12-15 skaters). Each session
consists of a 5 minute warm up, 45 minutes of rotating sessions
(lessons, practice, games and activities), and a 5 minute cool
down. Skaters receive ribbons as incentives.
Requirements: Children must be 5 to 12 years of
age. Proof of age is required. Properly fitted CSA
approved helmets are strongly recommended for beginners.

CANSkate Program
(a Skate Canada sanctioned skills program)
Aim: The focus of this program is to learn and
develop a variety of skating skills. This program is
beneficial to any skater with an interest in ice sports (figure
skating, hockey, ringette). Participants earn badges while
they learn fundamental skating skills.Description: This
program is the learn-to-skate program for beginners who are 5 to
8 years of age. Skaters are placed in groups according to
ability and taught by a Professional Coach, assisted by
qualified CANSkate Program Assistants (1 per 10 skaters).
Each session consists of a 5 minute warm up, 40 minutes of
lesson time, and a 5 minute cool down. Skaters earn badges
as they progress through the program.

approved helmets are strongly recommended for beginners.

CANSkate Advanced Program
(a Skate Canada sanctioned skills program)
Aim: The focus of this program is to further
develop the skating skills learned in the CANSkate program as
well as learn a variety of new skating skills. This
program is beneficial to any skater with an interest in ice
sports (figure skating, hockey, ringette) or anyone interested
in a stronger skating base. This program is the feeder
program to all other Skate Canada Skating Programs.
Description: Skaters are placed in groups according to
badge level and taught by a Professional Coach, assisted by
qualified CANSkate Program Assistants (1 per 10 skaters).
Each session consists of a 5 to 10 minute warm up, 40 minutes of
lesson time, and a 5 minute cool down. Skaters continue to
earn badges as they progress through the program.
Requirements: Skaters must have the CANSkate
Stage 2 badge or higher, or have 7 Learn to Skate Program
ribbons, or be 8 years of age. Properly fitted CSA
approved helmets are strongly recommended for beginners.

Advanced Recreational
Program (a Skate Canada sanctioned STAR
recreational program)
Aim: The focus of this program is to further
develop figure skating skills at a recreational level. It
is an alternative program to the Junior STAR program.
Freeskate, dance, stroking and synchronized skating skills are
covered.Description: Skaters are taught in a
group lesson by a Professional Coach, assisted by qualified
CANSkate Program Assistants (1 per 25 skaters).
Requirements: Skaters must have their CANSkate
Stage 6 badge.

Pre-Junior STAR Program
(a Skate Canada sanctioned STAR program) Aim: The
focus of this program is to aid skaters and parents with the
transition from the CANSkate Advanced Program to the Skate
Canada STAR and Competitive Programs. The basic
progressions of freeskate, dance and synchronized skating skills
are covered. By experiencing instruction in small groups,
skaters can increase their skating potential significantly.
Description: Skaters are taught in a small group
setting by a Professional Coach (1 per 6 skaters).
Requirements: Skaters must have their CANSkate
Stage 4 badge. Skaters are strongly recommended to
register for one day of the CANSkate Advanced Program as well.
