Technical Manager – Kitchener-Waterloo Skating Club
The KWSC is located in the twin cities of Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario, 100 Km (60 miles) west of Toronto. Our home facility is the Carolyn Fedy Skating Centre, in Waterloo at the RIM Park complex, which includes four Olympic size rinks, a mirrored, hardwood studio space, an athletic centre, food concessions, and a skate shop. In existence since 1938, the KWSC organizes programs from pre-school to adults. We operate competitive programs that have sent Singles Skaters, Dance Pairs, Freeskate Pairs, and Synchronized Teams to compete in the Canadian Championships, as well as International Competitions. The KWSC is one of Canada's largest figure skating clubs.
Reporting directly to the Executive Director, the Technical Manager will take responsibility for all aspects of the development and management of on ice programs including the development and management of coaching staff within the KWSC at all levels, in all disciplines, in multiple facilities across the Kitchener-Waterloo area.
This position is 25 hours per week.
Job Summary
- Responsible for development of all on ice programs in collaboration with the Athletics Manager to maximize the potential of all skaters
- To plan, organize and monitor all KWSC on ice programs
- To provide leadership to coaching teams including recruiting, training, supervising and evaluating on a consistent basis;
- To provide input to KWSC strategic and budget planning process
- To monitor, competitive/recreational skating program budgets and make recommendations, if required, for changes to program to Executive Director
- To provide timely and professional response to skater/customer concerns
- To assist in the development of marketing and promotional materials
- Provide assistance with special projects and events
- Liaise with governing bodies, community partners as required
- Protect the future of KWSC by keeping current and providing the opportunity for coach and staff development
Education/Experience/Qualifications
- Subject matter expert in all disciplines of skating
- Post Secondary education in Recreation or equivalent
- Strong leadership, supervisory and interpersonal skills
- Proven track record of success in the development of skaters and skating programs at all levels
- Demonstrated ability to build and manage teams and foster a collaborative work environment
- Minimum level 3 coaching certification is preferred
Level of Effort Required:
Program Planning and Supervision - 60%
- Plan, organize and oversee all KWSC skating programs
- Evaluate existing KWSC skating programs through direct observation and monitoring, providing leadership/feedback as required to on ice staff
- Research as needed in order to develop new programs or expand/change criteria for existing programs ensuring efficient use of ice time and program profitability
- Plan skater development programs/seminars/guest coaches/evaluators/judges/simulations/exhibitions and facilitate participation of all our members
- Work with E.D. on special projects, plan and choreograph if required
- Provide E.D. with recommendations for facility requirements and staff requirements for all programs
- Manage scheduling and administration of test sessions ensuring the requirements of governing bodies are met
- Provide guidance on registration process ensuring materials and staff/volunteers are available
- Remain actively engaged with region, section, province and national bodies promoting club, seeking opportunities for KWSC members and providing up to date information to the club
- Participate in creation of leadership development program
Manage Coaches/Staff – 20%
- Recruit, orient, train, supervise, monitor and evaluate performance of coaches/staff ensuring compliance with changes to technical packages, program changes and attendance at seminars, workshops and conferences as appropriate
- Be a resource, leader and mentor for all on ice staff
- Ensure skater safety
- Equitably apply KWSC human resources policy
- In consultation with the Executive Director realign resources when required
- Deal with workplace conflict in a professional and timely manner
Budget/Finance/Reporting – 10%
- Provide information as needed for E.D for budgeting purposes
- Ensure all Skate Canada and other governing bodies’ requirements are met
- Ensure workplace legislative and KWSC policy compliance
Administrative Functions/Customer Service – 10%
- Manage communication
- Attend to web, phone enquiries and concerns in timely fashion
- Provide timely response to skater/parent concerns
- Attend team meetings as required and liaise with governing bodies and community partners as appropriate
