Athletics Manager – Kitchener-Waterloo Skating Club

The KWSC is located in the twin cities of Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario, 100 Km (60 miles) west of Toronto. Our home facility is the Carolyn Fedy Skating Centre, in Waterloo at the RIM Park complex, which includes four Olympic size rinks, a mirrored, hardwood studio space, an athletic centre, food concessions, and a skate shop. In existence since 1938, the KWSC organizes programs from pre-school to adults. We operate competitive programs that have sent Singles Skaters, Dance Pairs, Freeskate Pairs, and Synchronized Teams to compete in the Canadian Championships, as well as International Competitions. The KWSC is one of Canada's largest figure skating clubs.

Reporting directly to the Executive Director, the Athletics Manager will take responsibility for all aspects of the operations of off ice facilities and services including the development and management of programs and staff within the KWSC Athletic Centre. The Athletic Centre includes a fully equipped fitness facility, conditioning room and studio space that provide convenient access for off-ice conditioning, training services, and assessments for KWSC skaters and the general public.

This position is 25 hours per week.

Job Summary

  • Co-ordinate all off ice fitness, conditioning and performance related activities for KWSC skaters
  • Oversee the daily operations of the  KWSC Athletic Centre
  • Coordinate Fitness assessments, schedule appropriate skater conditioning and training programs
  • Provide up to date reports to coaches and skaters on off-ice training status and recommend changes when necessary
  • Prepare Athletics/Centre budget and participate in annual KWSC strategic planning process
  • Plan and implement community use non-skater programs
  • Recruit and supervise instructors/staff as required for Athletic Centre programs
  • Ensure facility and equipment are properly maintained to ensure all Athletic Centre workplace health and safety legislation is complied with
  • Seek out new and liaise with current community partners as required to develop Athletic Centre programs
  • Respond to skater/coach/customer issues in timely and professional manner
  • Actively participate as a member of KWSC management team

Education/Certification/Qualifications

  • Post Secondary Education in Kinesiology, Health Sciences, Fitness/Lifestyle Program, Recreation, Sport Administration or related field
  • 3-5 Years Supervisory/Management/Fitness Industry experience
  • History of ongoing education or additional certifications
  • Experience working with youth
  • Current First Aid/CPR
  • Police Records Check
  • Demonstrated advanced communication, interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated advanced organizational ability

Level of Effort Required:

Athletics Management/Program Development - 70%

  • Oversee Athletic Centre daily operations including facility, equipment upkeep, supervising program staff, respond to skater, coach/ customer issues, membership sales
  • Develop membership sales and marketing initiatives
  • Plan, organize and oversee Athletic Centre skating and non-skating programs
  • Lead creation of Leadership Development Program for KWSC skaters
  • Develop and manage studio use for club and external user programs
  • Ensure workplace health and safety and all other legislative requirements are complied with
  • Provide assistance with KWSC special events
  • Make recommendations for change, where required to Executive Director

Budget/Finance/ Reporting – 10%

  • Develop and monitor Athletics/Centre annual budgets and prepare reports as required
  • Ensure all regulatory and governing body requirements are met
  • Ensure KWSC workplace legislative and KWSC policy compliance
  • Participate in KWSC strategic planning and budgeting meetings as required

Manage/Coach Staff – 10%

  • Recruit, orient, train and evaluate the performance of Athletic Centre Staff
  • Ensure all health and safety/workplace legislative compliance
  • Equitably apply KWSC Human Resources policy
  • In consultation with Executive Director realign resources when required
  • Deal with workplace issues in a timely and professional manner

Administrative Functions/Customer Service – 10%

  • Manage communications
  • Ensure payroll and joint venture requirements met
  • Attend team meetings as required
  • Meeting with community partners as required
