Policy: Helmet Use

HELMET POLICY FOR SKATER SAFETY AND INJURY PREVENTION

Skate Canada and KWSC have approved a new Helmet policy for the safety of all skaters.  This policy requires that all skaters who skate in a KWSC recreational program or TCHSS program must wear a CSA approved hockey helmet.

As members of Skate Canada, KWSC and Twin City Hockey Skating School Coaches are required to ensure that this policy is enforced during all skating activities including lessons, competitions, carnival days or any other special on ice activities for any KWSC recreational skater or Twin City Hockey Skating School participant.

The following programs offered by the KWSC will require helmets:

  • Pre-School
  • CanSkate
  • Learn to Skate
  • Adult CanSkate
  • Parent and Tot (Parent and skater)
  • Pre-Power
  • Enrichment
  • All Twin City Hockey programs

KWSC also recommends face protection for all recreational programs and is mandatory for Pre-Power and all Twin City Hockey Skating School programs.

At any time skaters who skate in other KWSC programs, including STAR and Competitive are free to choose to wear protective head equipment at any time during KWSC programming.

The cities of Kitchener and Waterloo have many sporting equipment stores who are able to sell and properly fit the appropriate helmet for your skater.

HELMET USE DURING A COMPETITION OR TEST DAY:
Any skater that chooses to wear a CSA-approved hockey helmet during a competition or test day will not be subjected to any deductions in relation to the use of a helmet.
