GETTING STARTED IN SKATING
Just starting out and looking for advice? You're in the right place!
The starting point for children and adults of all ages is our Learn-to-Skate program. We offer different types of Learn-to-Skate programs geared towards specific ages, abilities, and skating interests.
These programs are offered year round at rinks located throughout Kitchener and Waterloo. They are taught by Skate Canada trained and certified professional coaches, assisted by a fantastic crew of volunteer Program Assistants.
Our Learn-to-Skate programs include:
- Parent & Tot
- Community Learn-to-Skate
- Teen CanSkate
- Adult CanSkate
- If your skater has identified that they would like to learn to skate, but need an individualized or adapted program, please contact us at email@example.com and we will make appropriate arrangements
- Which Learn-to-Skate programs is right for me?
This depends in part by your age, and in part by your interests. We have programs for skaters who just want to learn to skate for fun and fitness, those who want to prepare for figure skating, and those looking to improve their power and skills to become stronger hockey/ringette players. - Where can I learn more about your Learn-to-Skate programs?
Our Learn-to-Skate programs are described on our Learn-to-Skate program info page, which can be found by clicking the PROGRAMS menu in the top menu bar, and then selecting LEARN-TO-SKATE. You can also find relevant information by reading our Learn-to-Skate FAQs.
We also offer power skating programs through our Twin City Hockey Skating School. Information about our power skating program can be found at www.twincityhockeyskating.ca.
- How do I get started in figure skating?
The starting point for children and adults of all ages is one of our Learn-to-Skate programs. Basic skating skills common to all ice sports, including figure skating, are learned there. Next, skaters are introduced to the fundamentals of figure skating in our STAR 1 Figure Skating program. From there, skaters can progress to our STAR 1-4, or Group STAR programs.
Skaters with a desire to figure skate are encouraged to wear figure skates (with a toepick) as opposed to hockey skates, from the very start in our Learn-to-Skate programs. However, it is not uncommon for skaters to successfully transition from hockey skates to figure skates.
- How can I become a stronger hockey or ringette player?
Stick handling, shooting, checking and even goaltending, while all different skills, have one thing in common--SKATING! Skating is the most fundamental skill required to play hockey or ringette, but often it is the least-practiced skill in young athletes.
Once players have mastered the skating basics in our Learn-to-Skate programs, they may choose to master their skating skills through our Twin City Hockey Skating School power skating programs. Hockey teams, including those competing at the highest level of the sport, recognize that the strongest players are those who learn to skate directly from the skating experts. The Twin City Hockey Skating School is a division of the Kitchener-Waterloo Skating Club, which is K-W's exclusive provider of Skate Canada sanctioned programs including CanPower. All Twin City Hockey Skating School coaches are highly skilled professional skating coaches, trained and certified by Skate Canada.
